If you’re a collector of antique furniture, then you know how important it is to take care of your pieces. Antique furniture can be worth a lot of money and it’s important that they are cared for properly so they don’t fall apart.

Here are some tips for taking care of your antique furniture:

Dust regularly. Dusting your antique furniture regularly will ensure that it doesn’t get too dusty and dirty, which can damage the finish over time. Use a soft cloth or microfiber cloth so you don’t scratch the finish.

Use coasters or mats under drinks and food items to protect the finish from water damage. Water damage can ruin the finish on an antique piece of furniture, so use coasters or mats underneath drinks and food items to keep them off the surface of your beautiful piece of furniture. Be sure not to let anything sit in liquid for too long or leave wet glasses or plates unattended on top of your table as this will cause discoloration or stains on the wood surface over time.

Protect the surface. Antique furniture often has delicate surfaces, so it's important to make sure the surface is protected from scratches and other damage. Use felt pads or cork under furniture legs to prevent scratching floors and wooden floors from getting dented or scratched by table legs.

Clean it gently. Be careful when cleaning antique furniture so you don't scratch its delicate surface. Use a soft, damp cloth that won't scratch and wipe gently in an up-and-down motion, not back-and-forth, which could cause the wood to splinter or crack. If needed, use a mild soap and water mixture (not ammonia) with a soft clean cloth to clean the surface without damaging it.

Do not use any kind of cleaning products on your antique furniture unless you have been instructed to do so by a professional restorer or conservator, as they may damage the surface of the wood or other materials used to make up your piece. This includes bleach and ammonia-based cleaners, which can darken the wood finish and remove color from fabrics used in upholstery pieces such as sofas, chairs, etc.
